Instructions for 2010 submissons

The 25th Annual  Festival will take place from 17th to 19th September 2010.

The committee have decided about how submissions for the 2010 festival will be considered. They have noted all the previous messages but will be considering POSTAL APPLICATIONS ONLY in the first instance. Instructions / advice for postal applications follow........ .. ..

Submissions are now open for both the Main and Open Stages. Submissions will close on 31st July 2010. That date is strict and no submissions will be accepted which arrive after that date. .... .. ..

Artists who have played in previous festivals, or have made submissions in previous years can send updates if they want to show how their material has developed or tell us about changes to the band for example, but be aware that there will be automatic consideration of previous years bands in any case..... .. ..

As usual we will be looking out for local talent to include – and if the committee have seen you locally they may approach you without looking for a submission..... .. ..

All submissions should be made strictly BY POST ONLY and should include a CD with one or more of your tracks. MP3 tracks are acceptable. We will not be able to look at DVDs in the first instance. The committee will listen to one track. If they really like it they will keep it to one side and look at any other details about yourselves you may have sent. It is only at that stage that they might look at your Facebook / MySpace / Bebo / Twitter / DVD / Full size cardboard cut out - or whatever – we just don’t have time. You can include information in any form you like – bribes are welcome provided you understand they will definitely not increase your chances of a booking. .... .. ..

Do make sure you include a contact phone number and an e-mail address. ....

.. ..

You are welcome to become our friend on MySpace if you have not already done so.

Click here to find us on MySpace and be our friend!

The very occasional blog there will carry details of any updates and you are encouraged to subscribe to it.

Updates will also be posted at our main web site

Gradually the list will be whittled down till only a few are contacted. There are separate consideration panels for the Main and Open Stages – so 2 chances of getting a spot. .... .. ..

It is important to know the difference between Main Stage and Open Stage bookings. .... .. ..

Acts engaged to play The Main Stage will be expected to play a number of sets (most commonly three) over the weekend at the various venues round the village for an agreed fixed fee. We are just a little free festival so don’t get your financial hopes up. Main Stage Acts are also allocated necessary accommodation and some meals are supplied. There are no extras for transport, riders or anything else. PA is laid on at local hotels and bars and you are allocated a two hour space for your set (including getting in and out and a really quick tune up), so you only need your own back line (if you use one – you can go direct through the PA if you want to). The PA guys will help you get set up and started and then you are on your own. We don’t dictate set length except that you need to have the stage clear at the end of your set as the next act needs to get on, and you need to make a reasonable effort to fill the time. You can take a quick break in the middle if you want. Repeating the same set at different venues is allowed. We will pull the plug if we have to so leave time for your encores. Also you must follow all reasonable requests from committee members or licensees at the venues (Yes – “Turn it Down” – always counts as a reasonable request!)..... .. ..

Acts booked for The Open Stage will be allocated one spot at the Main Hall Venue and will only get to play a few songs. The committee are watching and this is one of the places we spot future acts – Open Stage acts do not get any payment, expenses, riders – just the chance to be seen. The PA is provided by a local band and acts are encouraged to share equipment (like Drums) – you will be given a fixed amount of time and it is up to you how you use it – but time is short and we will pull the plug if we have to. Some bands have spent their half hour or so setting up and were not even able to play one song – so we suggest you come already tuned up and ready to go, but it’s your choice..... .. ..

Acts can apply for both stages if they wish. It’s up to you! We like and include all kinds of music and have had acts from all over the world. However, as I said we are a small free festival and cannot fund travel. Therefore we have only ever been able to include overseas acts when they have been touring in the UK at the time of the festival anyway. There are many folk who we know will come just for the craic- being at the end of the festival season it is a chance to let their hair down and play with no pressure. Tarbert is a popular Musicians Festival! Busking is encouraged and is very popular. The Police are very understanding during the festival provided you behave reasonably and obey their sensible requests. Sessions are definitely welcomed by all the venues especially when there is not a band on stage. Find a space and start playing – or join in with someone else who has done so – you will make lots of nice new friends!.... .. ..

Those who have been here before will know that the venues are close together and drinks are served in plastic glasses – If folk don’t like the band they just walk on to the next. That, plus the smoking ban means there are lots of folk on the street who like to listen..... .. .. And the layout of the village means there are lots of spots to sit (or stand) and play in without getting in everyone’s way. People who have been here before will notice the new improvements to the harbour side mean this is even more the case than before. .... .. ..

We love all of you and we love your music especially – We are a music Festival after all!.... .. ..

However, if the committee don’t like you quite enough from the first track there will not be time to listen to your MySpace or read any of the accompanying stuff you send. We’re sorry! We have probably missed out on some earth shattering acts but there just is not enough time. We do keep listening right up to the last minute..... .. ..

Sadly most folk won’t even get a reply. We won’t have time (or stamps) to send you the bad news or answer the queries about whether you have been considered yet. Rest assured that we will be getting in touch directly with those that we want to offer a contract. We need you to be aware that we will get hundreds of submissions. The vast majority of them are very good and many are excellent. We are just a little free festival and can’t take on more than a tiny fraction of the artistes we would like to. The festival is run by a committee of volunteers for nothing – in fact it costs us to do it in many ways. That means there is nobody to write back to those who have not been successful. We are not giving out a phone number as we do not have the time to answer the calls. Do not call round in person at the postal address – we will certainly consider disqualifying you if you do..... .. ..

The address for submissions is:

Tarbert Music Festival,

Ardencorrach,

Harbour Street

Tarbert,

Argyll

SCOTLAND

PA29 6UB .. ..

IMPORTANT - On the outside of your envelope…....

Submissions for the Main Stage(s) should be marked Main Stage(s) ....

And Submissions for the Open Stage should be marked Open Stage ....

And Submissions for the Both should be marked Both.

All enquiries from artists should be sent to artists@tarbertmusicfestival.com and I will try to answer them as best I can. The committee have a deliberate arms-length policy and will not enter into correspondence whatsoever.

I just do the website and have no influence whatsoever in who is chosen to play.

Note: I cannot check if your submission has arrived. No one has time to chase after enquiries like that. (When I could in earlier years they invariably had). If you want to know the only way is to use some form of recording delivery. .. ..

Good Luck....

We look forward to seeing you here – If you don’t get booked why not come and have a good time – bring something acoustic to play and jam or busk to your heart’s content!.... .. ..
